You wandered around Death City late at night, frightful of the dark shadows that lurked around each corner. It wasn’t your intention to get lost in the maze of a city, but after being deep in thought for quite a long time you seemed to have lost your way. After a while, the fear you had vanished. You realized that it was almost like an adventure that you normally read in books, there was nothing to fear.

    Until a monster appeared.

The thing was ten feet tall, with green, scaly skin and razor sharp talons protruding from its fingertips and tail. Its back was turned to you so you were not yet spotted. An easy chance for you to escape. Except you couldn’t. Your body was frozen with fear, mind too distraught to command your muscles orders. Monsters couldn’t possibly be real, right? But the thing standing in front of you was clearly real, not a figment of your imagination.

When your mind finally took charge of your body, you took a hasty step backwards causing a broken twig to crunch under your weight. The monster spun around and spotted you quickly, its sharp teeth revealed in what seemed to be a smile. It slowly began to make its way toward you. You knew you should’ve screamed or ran away but your body was frozen again, your mind unable to process the horrific creature in front of you.

Even when the monster was only feet from you, you still weren’t able to do a thing. The fear overpowered you so easily. You believed it to be the end and you couldn’t fight. Thankfully, someone else did.

“Trying to kill a cute girl? That’s so uncool,” a voice behind you said.

It was like the fear restricting you vanished into thin air once you heard that voice. You turned around, expecting to see another monster even though you knew it wasn’t. The guy who stood before you had spiky white hair and blood red eyes. The weirdest thing about him was that his right arm wasn’t an arm at all, it was a long, deadly sharp blade.

Once the monster saw the guy it hissed, black liquid oozing from its mouth. Then, after forgetting about you, the monster charged at the guy. You wanted to help the guy but you didn’t know how. Surely the monster would kill him and you didn’t want to see that happen. Before you could anything to help, the guy swung his arm/blade at the monster and cut it in half. Almost instantly the monster disappeared and in replace was a floating red soul.

In a blink of an eye, the guy’s blade turned back into his regular arm. Grabbing the red soul with his new arm, he brought it to his mouth and swallowed it whole.

“That’s disgusting,” you said, meaning to whisper. After all, you didn’t want to offend the guy who just saved your life. Instead, the guy only grinned at you.

“It tastes a lot better than it looks. You really think I’d be so uncool as to eat something disgusting?” he asked you.

You shrugged, not knowing how to answer his question. He sighed and extended his hand out to you.

“I’m Soul, the coolest guy around here. Who’re you?”

You hesitated before returning the handshake, afraid that his arm would turn into a blade again. After it proved to be safe, you took it and said, “I’m (Y/N).”

Before he could reply, two more hideous monsters appeared. Turning away from you, Soul’s right arm turned back into a sharp blade. Without waiting for the monsters to attack first, he charged at them and killed the first one almost instantly. The second one was giving him more trouble. As Soul slashed and lunged with his blade, the monster would do the same with its claws and tail. Neither opponent landed or received any blows, it was an equal match. Until the monster's tail threw Soul backwards. He skidded on the ground all the way until he was in front of you.

“This is so uncool,” he mumbled before turning to you. “I’m going to need your help with this.”

You were shocked at first. Unlike Soul, you weren’t trained at all to fight a monster and he needed your help? It would be a challenge but you agreed nonetheless. After all, what better way to repay the person who had just saved your life?

“Get ready,” Soul warned before disappearing. No, wait. He didn’t disappear, he turned into a scythe. “Just for now I need you to be my meister.”

“But I’m not experienced,” you told him, not wanting to get the both of you killed.

“With me as a partner, it doesn’t matter if you’re experienced or not. Just do what I say when I say it and you’ll do fine.”

You were still wary of the situation he put you in but you didn’t argue further. You nodded and attempted to pick him up still in his weapon form. At first, he seemed impossibly heavy. But in only seconds, something seemed to have flowed between you both and you were able to hold him.

“Ready?” Soul asked as the monster approached you both.

“Yes,” you lied, trying to hide the fear and doubt you had.

    “Then charge!”

You didn’t hesitate, you ran at the monster at a speed you didn’t think was possible for you. You ducked, jumped, and slashed whenever Soul said it was necessary. You put your faith and your life in the hands of a guy you just met, something you had previously doubted you would ever do. Your newfound trust seemed to have paid off. In only minutes after following Soul’s commands the monster was dead, the soul of it and its comrade floating for the taking. Soul transformed back into his normal self and swallowed both souls happily.

“Well, thank you for saving me and all but I probably should get going…,” you said, inching away from him as he swallowed the last soul.

“Hold on. For someone as inexperienced as you, you’re kinda cool. You have a lot of potential to be a great meister. Come with me, I’m taking you back to the D.W.M.A.”

And for some reason, you didn’t argue with that.
